Inside the Design Philosophy of Kelsey Ormonde of Sanctuaire

We recently sat down with our talented interior designer, Kelsey Ormonde, and delved into the influences that shape her distinctive style, gained insights into her vision for Kinwork, and gathered valuable advice for crafting the perfect workspace. Join us on this journey as we explore the inspirations, philosophies, and practical tips that elevate design to an art form, creating spaces that inspire productivity and creativity.

Journey into Interior Design

We are so excited to have you on this project with us! Can you share a bit about your background and how you became interested in interior design? What or who inspires your design style?

As a child, I always enjoyed redecorating with my mom. She allowed me to change my room's color and bedding every year, unknowingly nurturing a passion within me. Initially pursuing dental hygiene in college, I found myself drawn to help my friends and colleagues with their renovation projects. Eventually, word spread about my involvement, and it became both thrilling and nerve-wracking. The turning point came in 2020 when remote work became the norm, and people started reevaluating their living spaces. My once side business flourished! I started to delve deeper into spatial planning, color theories, and design trends through platforms like Instagram and reading various books. Joanna Gaines, Shea McGee, and Amber Lewis became my design muses. While they continue to influence my work, my travels around the world exposed me to different architectural styles. From opulent Roman structures to inventive solutions in impoverished areas, my unique design approach has been shaped by a variety of architectural influences.

Designing Kinwork: Combining Vision and Versatility

Can you share insights into the design philosophy and creative concepts behind the interior of Kinwork? What unique elements or features have you incorporated to enhance the collaborative and productive atmosphere of the coworking space?

When I joined the Kinwork project, the priority was understanding the client and their needs, as with any project. However, this venture required delving into the business and its vision. Kinwork aims to be an inclusive space for various creatives and solo-preneurs. Maintaining alignment with the brand's aesthetics while ensuring a welcoming ambiance for diverse professionals was crucial. One exciting aspect was discovering the original exposed barrel ceiling during the initial space tour. My love for finding balance and juxtaposition in design led to incorporating clean modern lines against the rustic backdrop. I always encourage clients to find a place (or a few) items to splurge on and I will help guide them on areas to save money when possible. Versatility playes a significant role in this space, offering various seating heights and options to keep the space dynamic and conducive to both small group collaborations and larger conference-style gatherings.

Crafting Inspiring Workspaces: Universal Design Tips

What advice do you have for individuals or businesses looking to enhance the design of their workspaces? How can someone without a background in design make simple yet effective changes to improve their workspace?

Firstly, document your thoughts early and consistently. Begin with physical notes on what works and what doesn't work for you and your team. Create a list of goals and reasons for the necessary adjustments. If clutter is a concern, prioritize budget for effective storage solutions. In my opinion, the three most affordable and impactful ways to refresh any space are through paint, rugs/textiles, and large-scale wall decor. It's a practical approach for anyone looking to transform their workspace without getting deep into design intricacies.
